Having (mercifully) left Black Friday behind us, we now prepare to embrace Blue-Violet Sundays for the next four weekends, mindful that Advent is the season in which the readings of Scripture invite us to prepare to receive the Lord Jesus.

By the time you read this, we will have elected (hopefully!) the next president of the United States. Both major party candidates, as is almost always the case, claim to be men of faith. They appear in churches, appeal to religious folks to support them because of their moral principles, and invoke God’s blessings on our land. They each want people of faith to support them.

Don’t just follow the faith; love it, too

“Who do you love?” The song, written by Bo Diddley in the 1950s and popularized by George Thorogood in the 1980s, asks a question we all must answer at some point. The question is in sharp focus in today’s first reading and in the Gospel reading, where Jesus reminds his followers of Moses’ command to the people of Israel to love God above all else.

The squeaky wheel of faith

We’re often told, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” meaning, I think, that whoever yells loudest gets the most attention. People use this expression to encourage one another to speak up when they want something, rather than expecting people to read their minds and know what they want or need.
