She dutifully contributed to the agency's Lenten Rice Bowl collection, but had only a vague notion of the reach the U.S. bishops' overseas relief and development agency had among the world's poor and marginalized people.

As new abortion laws take effect, questions loom on funding

As two Kansas abortion clinics prepared to close their doors because of new licensing requirements that took effect July 1, a federal judge blocked enforcement of a South Dakota law mandating a 72-hour waiting period and setting several informed consent provisions.

The two actions came amid a flurry of activity on abortion in various states, with much of it focused on defunding Planned Parenthood in the joint federal-state Medicaid program.

USCCB approves grants to Latin America

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America approved funding for 86 projects, worth over $2.1 million in grants, to aid the pastoral work of the Church in 20 countries throughout the hemisphere. The decision was made during the subcommittee’s meeting June 13, in Seattle.

Homeless: A mom with two kids now more likely to be counted

Out of work and living in a shelter, Jasmine, a single mother, has one thing on her mind: reuniting her family.

Son Emanuel, 3, is staying with Jasmine — who asked that her last name not be used — at the Ozanam Family Shelter in Edison, N.J., run by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Metuchen.
