Bishop Kevin Vann to be installed in Orange

Written by Tidings Staff Friday, 07 December 2012 14:45

The installation of Bishop Kevin W. Vann, as the fourth bishop of Orange will take place Dec. 10 at the Bren Events Center in Irvine.

On Dec. 9, an Evening Prayer for Bishop Vann will be celebrated at the future Christ Cathedral Arboretum in Garden Grove.

Bishop Vann, 61, was named by Pope Benedict XVI in September to succeed retiring Bishop Tod Brown, who had served as bishop since 1998. A native of Springfield, Ill., Bishop Vann had served as bishop of Fort Worth since 2005.

The Diocese of Orange, previously part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, was founded in 1976 and includes Orange County. One-third of the county’s 3.17 million residents are Catholic, served by 62 parishes and centers.

Orange’s founding bishop was Bishop William Johnson, a former Los Angeles auxiliary bishop, who served from 1976 until his death in 1986. He was succeeded by Bishop Norman McFarland, former San Francisco auxiliary and bishop of Reno, who served from 1986 to 1998 and died in 2010.

Prayer of the Month

Papal intentions for May: That administrators of justice may act always with integrity and right conscience; That seminaries, especially those of mission churches, may form pastors after the Heart of Christ, fully dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel.
