La Reina HS repeats as State Mock Trial champions
The La Reina High School Mock Trial Team captured the 2012 California State Championship on March 25 in Sacramento, the second consecutive state title for the team from Thousand Oaks.
The final match found La Reina's defense competing against the prosecution from Dos Pueblos High School from Santa Barbara County, with U.S. Senior District Court Judge William B. Shubb presiding. The team will represent California at the National Mock Trial Competition May 3-6 in Albuquerque.
La Reina’s team also won the 2011 world Mock Trial championship, the California State Championship in 2008 and 2011, and the Ventura County Championship 17 times since 1990.
Team members include seniors Olivia Polk and Hannah Young; juniors Hannah Delsohn, Elizabeth Hribal, Lena Melillo and Rachel Warner; sophomores Olivia Aulicino, Ryanne Bamieh, Camila Hamideh and Nisha Srinivasa; and freshmen Reilly Jones, Devin Montgomery and Ally Zlaket. Attorney coaches are Ron Bamieh, Kendall Jones, Jean Wentz and Rick Wentz; faculty coaches are Nayantara Bushen (La Reina ’08) and Liz Harlacher.
Said Notre Dame Sister LaReina Kelly, president of the school: “Our success in the Mock Trial program demonstrates our mission, especially the opportunities we provide for students to grow intellectually, to develop their individual gifts, and to be catalysts for the promotion of justice.”
Prayer of the MonthPapal intentions for November: That priests who experience difficulties may find comfort in their suffering, support in their doubts, and confirmation in their fidelity. That as fruit of the continental mission, Latin American Churches may send missionaries to other Churches.
Papal intentions for December: That children who are victims of abandonment or violence may find the love and protection they need. That Christians, enlightened by the Word incarnate, may prepare humanity for the Savior's coming.
